Brief description: The Global Institute of Social Studies (ISS), part of Erasmus University Rotterdam and situated in The Hague (The Netherlands), is recruiting excellent students for 5 PhD scholarships in Development Studies within the ISS research programme Global Development and Social Justice.

Level/Field of study: In the 2016 round, four PhD scholarships are presented for research linked to the following cross-cutting themes in the ISS research programme Global Development and Social Justice: Global Development and Social Justice; Migration; Environment and climate change; Social security and inequality; and variance.
One PhD scholarship is presented for research on topics interrelated to the Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa.

Target group: Non-EU Global students
Scholarship value/inclusions/duration:PhD students will be given a scholarship of €1,630 for every month, plus an additional allowance to cover the costs of their field work, which normally takes place during the second year into the PhD programme.
The PhD scholarships are for a greatest period of 4 years, starting 1 December 2016 or as soon thereafter as probable.
Eligibility: The PhD scholarships are presented only for citizens of countries that are not part of the European Economic Area. For all scholarships, candidates should submit the following:
a. Proof of having obtained an MA Degree in one of the Social Sciences or equivalent, comprising at least 4 years of study at a globally recognised university or Institute for Higher Education, as evidenced by certified copies of degrees and diplomas, and by copies of academic transcripts.
b. A research offer in one of the areas indicated above (4-6 pages).
c. Good command of English, both orally and in writing, as evidenced by holding a degree from an English-speaking university or by supplying the results of a ability test from a recognized authority (such as TOEFL, IELTS or British Council).
d. Names of at least three referees, who should be capable to give information about the candidate’s academic strengths.
