Brief description: The Vanier Canadian Government Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) was produced to interest and recall world-class doctoral students and to launch Canada as a global center of brilliance in investigation and higher learning.  The scholarships are towards a doctoral degree (or joint MA/PhD or MD/PhD).

• be following your 1st doctoral degree (including shared undergraduate/graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the PhD serving of a mutual degree is suitable for capital;
• propose to pursue, in the summer semester or the educational year following the statement of results, full-time doctoral (or a combined graduate program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the proposing organization; Note that only the PhD serving of a joint degree is qualified for funding;
• not have completed more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2018
• have attained a 1st-class average, as determined by your organization, in each of the last 2 years of full-time study or equivalent. Applicants are encouraged to contact the organization for its meaning of a 1st-class regular; and
• must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.
Application instructions: Applicants must be selected by a Canadian Institution with a quota at which they want to study. Applicants cannot apply directly to the Vanier CGS program.   
Applications are initiated in one of two ways. Either the student informs the faculty of graduate studies at the selected organization of their determined to submit an application to the Vanier CGS program OR the organization recruits the nomination process by communicating the desired applicant.
Applications are arranged by the student and submitted to the nominating institution by their interior closing date using the Research Net application system.  The proposing organization then onwards suggested proposals to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by 1 November 2017.
