Brief description: Thanks to bighearted funding from the Society of the Sacred Heart, three fully-funded, full-time PhD studentships are presented for new abroad students, starting 1 October 2017. The studentships are for the support of 3 applicants with a strong academic record and the probable for academic brilliance at doctoral level.
Preference will be specified to applicants from lower or middle income countries. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to contributing to their home community through their planned research project or area of study, and through their future career plans.

Brief description: The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) was formed to create a center of attention and preserve world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of brilliance in research and higher learning.  The scholarships are towards a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
Host Institution(s): Canadian Universities with Vanier CGS allocation. Without exemption, the Vanier CGS is reasonable only at the suitable Canadian institution that submitted the nomination.
Level/Field(s) of study: PhD programmes (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) in health research; natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social sciences and/or humanities research
Number of Scholarships: Up to 167 scholarships are honored yearly
Target group: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are suitable to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.
Scholarship value/duration: The scholarships is worth $50,000 apiece year for 3 years.
Eligibility: To be measured for a Vanier CGS, you must:
• be nominated by only one Canadian university, which must have received a Vanier CGS allocation;
•  be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a established and considerable research component). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is suitable for funding;
•  propose to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the statement of results, full-time doctoral (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating university; Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is suitable for funding;
•  have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2017;
•  have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in every of the last 2 years of full-time study or equivalent. Applicants are confident to contact the university for its definition of a first-class average; and
•  not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.
Application instructions: Applicants must be nominated by a Canadian Institution with a quota at which they want to study. Applicants cannot submit an application directly to the Vanier CGS program.   
Applications are initiated in one of 2 ways. Either the student informs the faculty of graduate studies at the selected institution of their intent to submit an application to the Vanier CGS program OR the institution initiates the nomination process by contacting the desired applicant.
Applications are organized by the student and submitted to the nominating institution by their internal closing date using the Research Net application system.  The nominating institution then forwards recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by2 November 2016.

  2. Gained admission to an approved masters or doctoral programme at an approved academic institution.
  3. A bachelors degree or its equivalent with superior academic record.

  5. Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be capable to pursue studies.
  6. Not more than 35 years old at the time of application. In exceptional cases, for programmes which are appropriate for senior officials and managers, the age limit is 45 years.
  7. In good health.
  8. Suitable candidates should agree to return to their home country after completion of studies under the programme.
  9. Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not suitable for the Scholarship.
  10. Staff of JSP-designated institutions are not suitable to submit an application to their own institution.
  11. Candidates living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not suitable for scholarships.
  12. ADB-JSP does not support candidates who are already enrolled in graduate degree programs.
  13. ADB-JSP does not sponsor undergraduate studies, distance learning programmes, short-term training, conferences, seminars, thesis writing, and research projects.
Application instructions: Only after you have gained admission to an entitled postgraduate programme listed above for the 2017 intake and received an Official Offer of Place from the University of Auckland can you submit an application for the scholarship. Thus, you must first submit an application for admission ONLINE as a global candidate for one of the suitable programmes.
To submit an application for the scholarship, you will need to complete and submit the Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship application form and either post or courier with all required documents to the University. Applications for 2017  will close on 20 July 2016.
